While the Foundation does not yet have a formal mission statement or approved goals (that document is current under review and revision), the formation board has agreed on the following as general goals:
The issue of control of the Intellectual Property behind Mambo is a key concern behind the existence of the Foundation. We feel that it benefits the community for a single organization to hold the rights to Mambo. Prior to the Foundation, the intellectual property of Mambo was jointly held by individual developers and by Miro PT. (see also, A Brief History of Mambo) The old ad hoc system of ownership and operation worked up to a certain point, but Mambo grew to the point where a more formal and professional structure was needed in order for the system to continue to prosper. Having the Foundation hold the IP rights helps us promotes the goals of providing a more transparent, accountable and professional structure in the following regards: Minimizes confusion and provides assurance of continuityOrganizations considering adopting Mambo have a simple answer for "Who owns this?" rather than a more complicated answer that might scare away overly cautious or risk averse firms. Protection Against Unfair UseBy having the Foundation hold the trademarks and rights to the Mambo branding assets, it can effectively protect these from unfair use. Guarantee of future Open Source versionsThe Foundation will ensure that there will always be an OSI-approved version of Mambo. |
